Richard Feynman: Why Trains Stay on the Rails

Kottke.org links to a YouTube video of Richard Feynman explaining why trains stay on the tracks. The answer is not as obvious as you think.

That's the problem with scientists: all theory. Rail design is considerably more complicated. The flange is integral to the design and not just an audible warning device. The wheels are set in a bogey which is mounted to the car with a swivel. The outside track on a curve is set slightly higher. Strap gaurds, flange lubricators, the weight of the car, and on and on.
